my ignorance here as my 'admininstrative assistant' (wife) arranges this normally and this is mt first bike trip outside UK/IoM

should I get travel insurance for this trip (I know it is E111 territory but cost of air ambulances etc spring cheerily to mind)

apprarently the cover we have does not include travel on bikes over 125cc

any ideas welcome?

apparently most travel insurance wont cover you for anything larger than a moped.

I recently got a 17 day European policy through NCI for £30 over the phone.

I looked at getting yearly cover as I've got several trips planned this year. The one;s that mention bikes want a fortune, best I found was over £100/year from Swinton, but I had to ring them for that as the one on thier website doesn't mention bikes, and would have been under half the price. hink I worked out the Post Office made the most sense for a short trip.

Last 2 years I have used Carole Nash, who also insure my bike and give free european breakdown cover as well. My reasoning for this (rightly or wrongly) is that a few years ago I was on a tour with some friends in France, one guy lost the front of his bike riding over some grass next to his accomodation. A very low speed tumble but the bike landed on his ankle and he broke it. No damage to the bike. He had his breakdown/recovery with one company (AA I think) and his personal travel insurance with another. He didn't have a mobile so I tried to help him sort things out. £80 of calls later, the AA wouldn't recover his bike because it hadn't broke down and wasn't damaged therefore it was rideable. His personal travel insurer would help him to get home (by taxi, train, boat, train, train and taxi (all this on crutches), but wouldn't help with his bike (fair enough). Luckily, the people who owned the accomodation let him store the bike for free in their garage and he recovered it later himself.
The upshot is, I want may bike insurance, breakdown cover and personal travel insurance with one company so if something goes wrong, hopefully things can be sorted more easily. I have put the above senario to the Carole Nash reps and they reckon me and bike and wife would be sorted no argument. Havn't needed them yet, hope I don't.

Too expensive favs - they're charging an extra £50! because you're on a motorcycle.

Swinton is around £32 for annual European cover for any vehicle you're licenced to drive (inc. motorcycles)

I'm insured with Swinton and paid them an extra £40 for a years European breakdown cover for the bike. Talked to them about holiday insurance and it turns out thier cover they offer on the web doesn't include bikes, had to ring a local office for that and I think they quoted me around £100 for a years cover compared to about £25 for the basic non-bike cover

Weird Chris - I was covered by them last year after being assured they covered my bikes. Also phoned today as my premium is due in a few weeks time - bikes still covered I'm assured - at £31.04 a year for Europe and £50.52 for worldwide

Interesting one and one I've thoroughly followed up now.............................

Phoned Swinton "help" line several answers but when pushed all they would say was "we don't send anything out in writing here, we're only a call centre"

Phoned my local branch - very helpful - said she'd contact the insurers, AXA (Swinton are only a broker)

She phoned back and reassured me that they WILL cover motorcycle travel and refered me to the EXCLUSIONS page on the policy, page 11

Page 11, section 7:

Exclusions - Your use of a motorised vehicle unless a full United Kingdom driving licence is held permitting the use of such vehicles in the United Kingdom

I'm still not totally assured, so I contacted AXA directly and got a call centre in Mumbai. Whenever I gave her my Swinton policy number (starting SWN) she immediately stopped me and announced that she could give no information on this matter because I'm insured through Swinton Insurance! But the feckin' policy says my insurers are AXA!
She then transfered me back to Swinton in the UK who advised me that I can only deal with my local branch!!! Who'll only refer me to the policy page 11 .............Is this any way to run a f#?*$ng railway??????????

I hate it. You need it,, but 99% you won't need it.

Decided with Tony lunchtime today that breakdown cover we can cope with.

Personal cover is a bit more touchy. I am a defensive rider, middle road, full beam stuff. will never get caught.

But I bleat at £50 or so for me being careful n Old, for five days. Tomorrow I will have a play at this cover stuff

But tonight....We drink!!!

I've got European breakdown cover and one of those card thingies that replaced the E111 but not going to bother with holiday insurance.

If you're after cheap cover take a look at credit card companies, can't remember which one it is my parents are with but it gives them full holiday cover anywhere in the world with no limits on activities. Not bad deal considering how much a 70yr old diabetic with a heart bypass usually has to pay for such things.

But my thinking is 17 stone thrown down a B road in Kerry will only need a box and a plane ride home along with a few mates round a piano later.

Sounds like a good excuse for a p!ss up.

I went on the AA web site and got £6.70 for 4 days.. Better safe than sorry.

plus if I come home in a box the Missus dosent have to pay.

There may be enough left over for her to pay for a T shirt with " I told you so ", on it.
