Rtt10 - Where?
#1
Posted 23 July 2009 - 06:19 pm
any TDMer got any other suggestions or want to offer to organise it?
EDIT : adding poll with locations 2009-07-28
Portugal - not had an RTT there before, good weather, cheaper and local organiser, but more expensive to get there
Isle Of Mann - not had an RTT there before, good roads&no speed limits, central location for those in UK & Ireland, cheaper than mainland, but cost of ferry
Yorkshire/Derbyshire - central location and local organisers, not had an RTT there before, but RTT06 was close in Lake District, good roads but traffic?
Scottish Highlands - central location and many local organisers available, but we already have a yearly meet in Scotland (although normally further south), good roads but not as central as others and weather can be 'changeable'
poll results
Portugal [ 14 ] [35.90%]
Isle of Mann [ 16 ] [41.03%]
Yorkshire/Derbyshire [ 2 ] [5.13%]
Scottish Highlands [ 7 ] [17.95%]

I'd be quite happy with Portugal (via Santander?)
But an alternative, maybe depending on the outcome of the International 2011 meet discussions, could be Vosges - either as a recce, or in it's own right?

I'm in agreement, but would like to suggest we postpone it a week from its usual dates so we can incorporate the S100 races
there's plenty of touristy things to do. Accepted they will not involve mega mileage trips but the break can therefore be relaxed. There is always the opportunity of early morning laps over the mountain for those who like a bit of pace to their holidays.
We've been go across to the island for a family holiday each year for several years now and always find enough to do.

Regardless of dates, I wouldn't be going to the IOM.

2011 will be a big tour when it is organised,
Maybe the IOM will suit people finance wise, what with the credit crunch!!!!

I did go to the IoM TT in 2006 - but I had only been riding for a year.
Positives
We would be crossing water (one of my personal criteria for an RTT location).
There are twisties and mountains.
There are lots of little hidden away places on the South part of the island - the half away from the TT course.
Accessibility for all of UK & Ireland
Negatives
Been there (dont like going back to places - never get the same "discovery" buzz)
Would not fancy it during a race week - too busy, ferry too expensive.
Chris G makes a good point. You can cover most of the island in a day.
So I'm sitting on the fence
XT1200Z - Big and bouncy
GTR1400 - Chaufer the wife.
XT660Z - Fun and commute.
TDM900 - Yellow.

Speaking from the benefit of a whole 1 RTT, I wonder that if there's a view the IOM would be more economic if that truly is the case, I've also heard of astronomic ferry costs but maybe this is only on race weeks.,
So I've just emailed the Steam Packet Co. to ask about a group discount for a 7-day crossing next summer, didn't stipulate a date just "late June/early July".
That's another question is it 1st week July again, or given comments at RTT09 is earlier (late June) an option?

As well as the best completely de-restricted roads on the planet it is a beautiful, compact, encapsulation of some of best UK landscapes.
These range from high moorland, secluded glens, water features and stunning coastline. Biking roads vary from the TT circuit, with 180 mph stretches (eek) on the mountain (not by me but PaulB where are you?) to twisty, bumpy sections in the beauty of the southern parts of the island.
As well as this there is the fascination of some of the most varied rail and tram systems in the world and some really gorgoues coast towns, with pubs, like port erin and port st mary, Peel and castletown.
I can see that people may be concerned about spending a whole week there and costs of ferry ( I think about £100 may cover it off-TT week) and wonder if the best way is to combine IoM and nortgerhn england visit together. Say 4 days in dales or peak, and 4 days on IoM
This would offer
- cost effective RTT10 in light of Euro strength and credit crunch and a mega 2011
- using local knowlegde of TDM to put together some stunning rideouts ( just look at some of the local G2G to places like dales and lakes as well as IoM)
- also using local know;ledge to ensure range of accommodation we could even do TDM home stay ( not as daft as it may look)
- we may also even be able to make us of TT home stay arrangements where we can get volunteers from people we have stayed with over there
down side is possibility of rain - does not bother me but people will clearly have views
I would be happy to help arrangements where possible if people are interested in this approach
