Hi guys,

I thought it's about time I overhauled the rear linkage on my 900. I'm sure somewhere on the forum is a step by step guide to the job, together with a few tips at removing that pesky blind ended frame mount bearing.

Snag is I can't for the life of me find it despite all sorts of searches.

Any chance anyone can put the 'link' up for me (assuming it's still around somewhere).

Many thanks all.

Riggers.

Thanks dablik. I'm sure someone posted up showing how you can use a wall bolt to remove the said pesky bearing. :-)

Attached File  IMG_36161.JPG   102.64KB   2 downloadsHi again guys. Well I'm in the middle of the removing the 'pesky pin' from the rear suspension linkage. All my reading on the subject suggests an M6 rawl bolt for the job but as the pic shows it seems too larger diameter by maybe one or even two mm.

Have I missed something here or have I fallen into a trap known to all except me? :-(

Any ideas guys?

This is what I bought...

In post #14 of the second link given by Studley I commented that one needs the tubular version of the Rawlbolt, not the cast one. There is even a pic of what I used.

Yep thanks Steve on re-reading I noticed that, and managed to get hold of one today. Unfortunately I can't get it to grip the inside of the pin despite my best efforts. I'm now waiting for  another rawl bolt to arrive from e.bay and keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for your reply mate.

Many thanks for that mate. I'll give your method a go as I can't get a standard rawl bolt to grip the inside of the pin.  :good:

With thanks to all on the forum who have contributed to this topic, by using a combination of everyone's methods I managed to get the rear suspension 'blind pin' removed. And a good thing I did too as it was just starting to corrode away merrily as it nested tightly in the frame lug.

I eventually got a suitable 10mm rawl bolt from B & Q, but couldn't get one long enough to use as a puller. So I tightened it up really well inside the pin and then applied some gentle heat to the left side lug (no need to heat the right hand side one as the pin doesn't enter it).

After getting the lug reasonably hot I used a screwdriver as a drift to tap the pin out from the right hand side of the bike. By using a screw driver I was able to carefully only tap the bolt of the rawl bolt and not the sleeve, and thus the more I tapped the tighter it became lodged inside the pin.

I kept up a combination of heat and tapping, heat and tapping, ever conscious of the horror stories of breaking off the frame lug, and eventually out it came.

The pin was a bit corroded, but by far the worst was the one at the top of the dog bones.

Here are a few pictures of the job in progress.

The top dog bone bolt was the worst corroded.

The stupid design means the pin doesn't locate into the right hand lug at all!

Job done!

The trick now is that it has been done, to do once a year and it is literally a 20 minute to half an hour job. Do one bolt/sleeve at a time, coat liberally in moly grease and put back on..

I think it would be a good idea if the moderator (dableb?) would pull all the different threads and piccies together and put them in Knowledge Base, as it's such an important maintenance task. Currently it's a bit hit and miss when trying to find all the contributions.

If a few agree I'll put a request in.........
