Ethanol

After diligently filling dangermouse 1 gallon of BP ultimate at a time over several months in preparation for an ethanol free winter storage....job done, I decided that the TDM should also be stored ethanol free.
So yesterday I brimmed from the same pump and noticed the code "E5". No description, just E5.... This made me suspicious so I had a quick Google and found this...
https://knowyourfuel.campaign.gov.uk/
So is it NOT 0%? Wouldn't you have thought maybe this system could have bothered to add an "E0" if it is indeed 0%???
I then checked Esso as they claim their "ultimate" is 0% ethanol...
"Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland."
.....just been to local Esso and also "E5".

I haven't noticed any damage caused to poipes, hoses, carbs etc from ethanol in fuel...but that doesn't mean it's not there.
I just find it very odd that someone has come up with this cunning plan and introduce a new rating system and then don't include "E0"! Even if it is going to disappear, it would still have been a useful addition until extinct.

I've been in the chemistry side of oil additive production, and still find what goes on, seasonally, locally, geographically and just plain ridiculously, a mystery!!

Ethanol proof carb kits available frome LiteTek chaps.
I have that kit and forgot I did till fond a small brown envelope.
Do they do some thing similar for valve stem seals or is that a different compound?

If and when any of you make it over to France after the Plague don't make the stupid mistake I did the other day.
I was deep into France Profonde and decidedly low on fuel on my Mk1 TDM so rolled into and Intermarche mini supermarket that does fuel also. The Pump had three nozzles, one Gazole (diesel) another SP95 and another labelled E85....now remember that....E85 !!
In a fit of madness, senility, pure idiocy, I selected the bloody E85 and merrily filled up. Off I went and within a few minutes it was obvious something was wrong. Normally I can roll into a roundabout in third gear on a trailing throttle and accelerate cleanly out with usually 1750 rpm showing. Not now ! Coughing and spluttering and below 2000rpm running like a bloody burst arse !
At first I thought I'd picked up some water at my last refill but then it came back to me....E85 !!
This is the stuff that is made up of 85% bioethanol and the rest petrol, it's really cheap and works wonders for the environment .The atmosphere will be so clean Dodos will make a reappearance.
Until recently it was only available at bigger filling stations that had 4 nozzle pumps and was easy to spot.
I used up 5 or 6 litres and then filled up with SP95 E5 ....5% ethanol..... and kept doing so until the bike was running more or less normally. I then ran it onto reserve and kept going till I was running on fumes practically then filled it with SP 95 E5 again.
My TDM is now running exactly as it was before and I don't seem to have done any lasting damage. If anything the engine seemed to run cooler ?
So watch out when you're refilling in France and avoid that damned E85 !!

also i'm lead to believe that ethanol is also hygroscopic so can collect water over the winter

i'm lead to believe
I see what ewe did there.
That's the very reason I was hunting out ethanol free fuel.

I added some of this for the winter
https://www.amazon.c...aps,169&sr=8-38
1 bottle treats 80 gallons so a bottle will last me a few years for winter when the bikes not ridden much, more for my Blackbird, which I still ride 10-15 miles every few weeks on a dry day in winter lol
the TDM,that gets used most of the year

Another way of looking at it is if you have water in your fuel tank (in normal use), it will actually help absorb it and clear it out of the system.
