5w ?  Is that a typo Dabs ?  How much weight have you lost mate ?

No typo matey, got 5 weight for newly built forks,bushes seals and stantions all brand spanking and decided to start off at 5 weight, not really put the bike through it's paces yet but so far so good

Back to being a fat footer now since covid

Edit.. Interestingly I was advised to use 5 weight when I bought Wilberforce progressive fork springs for the 900 !

Be aware that there is no standard for "weight" in fork oils, and different brands' "10W" can vary considerably.

To compare different weights you should do so within a single brand according to that. Other similar tables are available.

I dug into this to set out a range of viscosities which I could try and change between, and then when i came across a table similar to the one above I decided to take the old advice of using ATF for my next fill, which continues to work very well for me, at 100kg body weight.

 

ATF is produced under very strict conditions and all brands have to meet the same standards

Honda used to specify ATF for their fork oil. My CBX750 has used it for, literally, decades. Nice pink colour too!

On my early TDM 850 I have drains at the bottom of the fork legs. Has anyone else used these to drain off fork oil ?

I have tried this method on other machines a long time ago, but it's a bit of a pain in the arse. When you compress the forks the oil squirts out for miles and you really need someone there holding a container.

I would then repeat the process twice after pouring in half a litre of white spirit to flush the insides out.

I don't actually use this method with my TDM 850 but wonder if anyone else does this.

I change my fork oil every year and I'm always puzzled by how much less oil actually comes out ? I refill with 395 cc of ATF then using the measured level technique I add another 25 cc to each leg.

But a year later there's nowhere near that amount comes out. 

There's no leaks, seals are fine, so where does it go ?

I tried it once, but AFAIR the hassle leading fluid out of these micro holes without spilling it all over didn't attempt a redoing....
