Best to check oil level after a run really, gives the gearbox time to warm up too. Also worth waiting a few mins after you stop before checking the level.

I check it every other day when I'm using it regularly. If stood for a while, always run it up, leave it for a few mins, and check with the bike standing upright.
I check with the dipstick resting on the thread, and make sure the oil level is a sniff below the 'F' to allow for when the dipstick is fully screwed in. Haven't gone wrong so far, because I check it regularly. My TDM like many others uses more oil than the Exxon Valdez.

Nope. Ceramisizerers can only ceramisoize alloy components. Charlie sent his barrels and pistons off to ceramisizerers and only the pistons were done. He also never rebuilt the engine so don't know if it helped or not.

Resurrecting old thread alert !
My son has a Mk2 oil drinker. He checks the oil after a run, bike on the centre stand but leaves the engine running.
I said that he should switch it off for a minute or two before checking , but strictly speaking the extract from the
service manual earlier in this thread says nothing about either stopping the engine or checking while it is still running.
Any thoughts ?
How ya, the enjun must be switched off to check the oil level accurately as the oil will still be circulating when it's idling. I usually ride the bike a mile or 2 to warm it up then switch it off and sit for 5 or 10 mins afore checking.

you need to wait a minute or two to let the oil settle mind you the time taken to use the dip stick or get down to use the sight glass will be enough if the oil is warm

Hi all not sure its the right topic , as Im new but hear goes
Just brought a R reg tdm 850 its been sat a while, but I cleaned the carbs and dropped the oil ,
Took out 2half L Ish , I put it straight back in via the filler neck on right hand side just below the frame ,
I ran the bike for a couple of minutes, but sounds ruff so I removed the sump plug again , but no oil came out , but the viewing window says half full ? Any ideas as I dont want to run the engine with no oil in the bottom end . Thanks in advance
There are 2 drain plugs. Is the oil filter in the correct way?
