Good point that man.
One of mine did go about a week after an oil change but I've had one go in between too.

Sure - its anecdotal evidence.

The area at the top of the stator appears to be is insufficiently cooled - mine has flaking paint on the to of the stator cover. I think the potential restriction in oil flow rate could exacerbate an existing hot spot and just tip it over the edge. If I recall correctly, Ali had performed a service prior to his touring incident; as had I prior to the Monshau RTT this year.

With a decent battery on the bike, the failure could take some tome to manifest itself. I got all the way home from the Monschau RTT without a generator on a single battery.

Yes mine that failed earlier this year was during the first ride after a service and showed evidence of overheating at the top where all the tails are connected ;)

It's certainly explain why a lot of 9'ers have flaking paint on the stator cover.  Could be onto summat there Mark.

Can't remember how soon after the last service mind died.

All I know is that it happened within days of getting stuck in a snow storm, and had made the journey home from work at about 5mph most of the way, which I put down to the failure.  Headlights on, heated grips on (MAX), and very little charge going back in.

OK - so 4,00 miles later and its gone again - well and truly burnt out - again all across the top.

This time I am going to investigate the oil route into the area. The manual describes holes in the shaft which provide oil to the area. I may well poke these with a wire or summat and see if there is any crud in them.

Studly - Thanks - will look closely when I get the rotor off. - just taking my time - not sure how I know he rotor position - I have to maintain the TDC mark in the correct position. But the 3 allen bolts look equidistant. Is this where the woodruff key comes into its own?

Rallyist

Yes it was a rewind from the guy in Torquay. I have a spare from him which is going in.soon as I figure out how to do the loom bits. He rewound both for me last time and gave me enough wire to get to the connector.

The woodruff key lines up with an arrowhead mark on the casing on the 8fiddly. :)

Here's a pic of my rotor showing the oil holes around the edge of the rim.  Dunno if yours is the same or not.

That was 4,000 miles - replaced following failure on the 2013 RTT.

I have found a guy in Swindon who is a motorcycle wire/electrics specialist.

When I explained what was happening, he said he did not feel it was a cooling issue. He said it would take a massive earth to burn it out as badly as mine was. He wants the bike, when I have fitted the new stator, to do some diagnostic measurements through the R/R.

I fitted a voltmeter to my dash this afternoon. Will fit new Stator next Saturday morning and update this thread with info.
