Std screen = lots of helmet wind roar.
MRA Vario = wind roar/buffeting depending on how the adjustable bit is set.
Yamaha +145 = buffeting.

Standard screen + earplugs = mild wind rumble

I've cut my standard screen down to get rid of the 'kick', wind now hits me in the chest, but more importantly a constant stream of air hits me in the chest NO BUFFETING!

I wondered about standing the entire screen forward of the bike (Think Touring bike), before i cut the top off my screen, i'd drilled three holes in it to do something similar but less pretty than baron...

Anyone have access to a wind tunnel???!!!

I get no wetter when it is raining without the fairing than I did with it, and you'd be surprised how little wind force there is on the body, enabling sustained 90/95mph cruising in comfort, if anybody should meet me out and about on it they're welcome to have a go on it to see for themselves.

I for one believe it, having ridden naked bikes (as was the standard) back in the 70's. I can't remember any problem with wind noise, even using an open-face helmet or the crude first generation of closed ones (Ah the luxury of warmth, though - no more sheepskin facemasks!). If screens do serve any real function (?), maybe they should be designed by helmet angineers? Sadly, this leads to wondering what those "half car" enclosed BMW thingys are like - though I'm not going to be seen in/on one!

A colleague of mine has a C1 and I've had a go round the block near work. His is only the 125 as he is a learner. It has a very low power to weight ratio due to all the metalwork and an extremely high centre of gravity! It was rather strange riding on tiny wheels too...... and horrible twist and go - I kept putting the back brake on thinking it was the clutch. There's all manner of crap on it - windscreen wiper, heated this that and the other, seat belt that won't let you start unless it's done up, ridiculously over complicated centre-stand, immobilser etc. etc. Plenty to go wrong (and it does).

He rides in all weathers as he commutes from the Isle of Wight on the foot passenger ferry and leaves the bike at the docks. He only wears a light anorak and no gloves (as he falsely believes himself to be immune form crash damage due to being in half a cage) but he does stay dry - and the heater blower keems him warm and the windscreen demisted!!!

Needless to say, the guy's the butt of many jokes but he's pretty thick skinned about it.....you'd have to be, I guess.

this is good cos it opens up the possibility fer MKI & MKII owners to buy the spoiler bit and mount it to a stock or aftermarket screen.

I totally agree. I think they look good and I like the idea of it being adjustable.

But:

This seems so much more sensible (and cheaper!). I am so tempted to just cut it off at the kinky bit.

I guess I'll wait until experiments are done by others (thanks guys ) and decide then

No one is taking a saw to mine! And there is also no way I am going to dispense with my screen. Don't you find that at brisk speeds on a naked bike it feels like someone is trying wrench your lid/head upwards off your neck? I don't get effect that with a screen. Also its much colder without a screen, even a small one deflects cold air away from your body. I only find buffeting a real problem on motorways, and interestingly its worse with a pillion. I get severe nodding dog syndrome even around 80 mph. There are so many variables affecting turbulence - speed, road type, tank bag, pillion, colour of paintwork, top box, not just screen height.

Some of you may have seen my enquiries regarding availability of a touring screen to provide a buffeting free and lower helmet noise ride for a 6' 4" rider...i.e. me.

So far I've tried the standard TDM900 screen, MRA vario and Yamaha +145 screen. Each one obviously raises the impact point of the air flow on my body/helmet with varying helmet noise consequences as follows.

Std screen = lots of helmet wind roar.

Yanaha +145 = buffeting.

So, the next thing to try was either have a few vertibrae removed or fit the adjustible bit off the MRA screen to the taller Yamaha +145 screen....see pics.

This has resulted in no buffeting and less wind roar that the Std screen, so a reasonable result me thinks.

The one thing I intend to do now is to take the main part of the MRA vario screen and cut it down to make it shorter than the standard screen. The intention being to get my helmet into a clean air stream whilst taking the majority of the sale effect away from my chest. Watch this space for further news.

As expected, this has lowered the point of wind blast to roughly level with my armpits....or oxters as they are known North of the border

This leaves my bonce in cleaner air and provides for a nice cool blast around my oxters.....very welcome during our scorching summer months

Aye, covered as many possibilities as I'm going to anyway. The next step would be a Sinclair C5 screen but I don't want to go there
