That's exactly the sime as Nitrams bike and my bike, which are both '98 bikes reg'd in 2000.

It is a lovely bike in great condition, and I think you got it for a good price.

What milage is on it?

It showed 11000 miles, I think the previous owner had fallen on the left... there are slightly marks on the exaust, never mind.... I bought a wax and some rust remove treatment, Saturday I will celebrate my birthday cleaning it.
What engine oil would you recommend?
it is near the lower level, a 10/40 or a 15/50?
It shouldn't be a problem if mixead with the previous one, right?

Patrik ride the bike for 15 minutes before you check the engine oil level (don't just let it run while parked up on the side stand, as this gives a false reading). w

I have ridden it for about 45km without registerplates, and just with a some explication paper from my agency. (half illegal, but I managed not to confront any policeman ) Now it's there in the agency's display window waiting for all the papers to be done.

Wasn't aware of the German forum, which isn't up to the Carpe standard, but is at least apparently alive unlike the Danish one (ref. the recent eBay nutter). Has some technical and touring stuff, merchandise etc....

Hi there,
I am looking at my first TDM.
I am in the UK.
It is said to be a 2005 but how can I be sure?
I am worried it is a Model 2004 or even 2003 sold in 2005 to a guy who thought that as long as it was registered in 2005 that was ok.
What were the model colours in 2003, 2004 and 2005?

I don't mind if it is one of these years but were the bikes mechanically the same over these 3 years?

Hi Peter,

Welcome to Carpe!

I'm not an expert on TDM evolution, but the model did change over those three years. I think the suspension firmed up in 2004, and an imobiliser was fitted (possibly as standard, but my 04 reg hasn't got one ).

There are sone great pictures on different colour schemes in the Gallery . I don't know if it's complete, and it may vary by region, but it may help.

I'm sure other members will give you more tips and info.

The main difference is the engine the MkI has a 360 deg crank and the MkII has a 270 deg crank making the MkII feel a bit more like a V twin.
other than that it is maining styling.
£1699 is what a good MkI seems to go for in a dealer (MCS Paisley has a fair 94 MkI for £1795).

a decent low mileage mk1 in a dealer should be £1400 tops

theres a nice early low mileage (19k) mk1 in red with stainless exhaust in my local mechanics place, it was up for £1200 or 1300 i think.

Hi guys.

I'm Tyler, Peter's son. I'm looking at a 1994 mk1, not 1991. But the price is higher than parkers says. I am going to talk to the dealer about that this week. I would like to ask what other differences there are between the mk1 and 2 other than the 360/270 crank please. Does anyone know if there are suspension, chassis or electrics differences? Anything significant that would make me want to wait for a mk2 would be nice to know about. Maintenance and reliability issues are also important. I will maintain the bike myself, so a heads up is great.

The price isn't so high, as the bike has a good clean full Motad Nexxus system, Protaper bars, R1 gold spot calipers, braided brake lines all round, and I prefer the fact that it is from a dealer with a health check,mot and someone to go back to if something happens.

But I would greatly appretiate any help you gents can offer, thank you.

a 1994 is still a mk1, they just changed the standard silencers from matt to chrome that year and added a few new colour schemes
the mk2 came out in 1996, the electronics and speedo etc werent changed much from the mk1 until the mk2a came out in 1999/2000
the mk2a had a slight gearbox change and a few updates to the electrics and dashboard type stuff

lots of parts are the same between all 3 versions
if you can get a verified good example of either mk you'll be fine

just check the oil consumption, the front sprocket and output shaft thread, if its a mk1 see if the regulator has been changed and that sould see you right
