Did the work at the weekend and it seems to have done the trick - didn't hear the rattle at all on my 50 mile round trip commute today. The job was simplicity itself following Dandywarhol's excellent instructions. Here's a step-by-step pictorial guide to the job as performed on my 2002 900.

The bits you need: Cam Chain Tensioner is part no. 5PS-12210-10, gasket is part. no. 5JW-12213-00. Note that the new tensioner has a sort of locking plate fitted where the centre bolt normally fits. Do not remove this yet.


First off, remove both screw covers from the LHS of the engine. The big one reveals the nut at centre of generator, the second, smaller cover reveals the timing marks. Turn the engine anticlockwise by the centre nut, you'll feel compression as you turn it and the compression stops just when the "T" mark aligns. Recheck by turning another 2 turns anticlockwise - compression is only felt before "T" when the left cylinder is on compression. If no compression is felt when the "T" mark is visible then you've got the left cylinder at the end of exhaust/beginning of induction - DO NOT REMOVE THE TENSIONER IN THIS POSITION as the chain will not be tensioned and you risk the chain jumping a tooth or two. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING!


With the timing set up correctly, remove the cam chain tensioner (two allen bolts) and fit the new one with the new gasket. Here's the new one fitted:


When it's in place remove the locking plate. You'll hear a clunk as the new adjuster "assumes the position". Fit the new bolt & washer where the locking plate was.


Pray to any Gods you have and start her up. With luck, the job is indeed a carrot. I have a fair amount of mechanical experience, but I've never really worked on a modern Jap bike four stroke engine before, other than routine maintenance. I'd say anyone who has serviced the TDM will have the tools and skill to do this job. Obviously, if you're not confident in doing this then don't take the risk - if it goes wrong it'll be bloody expensive to fix!! rolleyes.gif

As you can see, the part of the body which goes inside is longer than the old one. Thanks to all the Carpedians for their valuable instruction on this, especially Dandywarhol.

Glad you bumped up the thread; I'll be needing it soon as I still haven't checked the tensioner like I said I would. blush.gif Got a valve clearance check coming up very shortly so I'll do it then. smile.gif

I priced up a tensioner in Australia and they want $236 for it blink.gif

Am I wrong in thinking that is damn expensive.

Is there anywhere better to order through?

Very damn expensive, mine cost me about £40 delivered which is $85 according to Google! I got the bits from Fowlers , and they do worldwide delivery.

I've called all the suppliers of yamaha parts in WA and they all say $200+ this is highway robbery.
I'm still waiting to hear back from fowlers but I hope they can give me a better price.
I've been through this crap with Honda Australia overcharging parts and hoped yamaha would be differant.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

For anyone curious, I took the tensioner out of my 05 bike yesterday and it's the newer of the two designs shown in Matlock's photos. So if you have a genuine 2005-onwards 900 that wasn't registered late, it should be fitted with the latest tensioner. good.gif

So is the canchain thingy what I noticed on bike yesterday? On the overrun (closing the throttle) there's quite horrible screamy sound coming from the enjin(ish) area is that Cam Chain thingy....clutch plates?

That is so so true.

I bought a top box from a dealer on the web. When it arrived it was scratched. What was the response?


No problem sir, you can have a full refund, or a new one, or if its not too bad you can try to get the scratch out your self and we will workout some credit, and if after that you're still not happy we will go back to the other options...

Wow. I'll deal with them again even though there was a problem.


Compare that to "fuck off mate we're not interested"



Because they were so good about it, and to reduce the hassle both ends, I've put some perspex polish on it and its good enough for me. Had they been in the least bit thingy, they would have had to replace it. Interesting that.
