Must be a location specific type thing. A few years ago I went camping with a few friends down the coast at Pebbly Beach. One of my girlfriends was woken early by the sound of rustling in her tent and assumed her boyfriend was rummaging around in order to get breakfast ready. But when she opened her eyes she nearly had a heart attack as a large kangaroo was inside the tent busily eating the Weet-bix. Her boyfriend had left the tent open when he went to the loo block a few minutes earlier.

I reckon waking up and finding a big roo in your tent would be scarier than a cute little badger anyday of the week. Altho...I guess Helen was lucky it wasn't a goanna.

Please note: I have no idea what a badger is exactly. They look cute and cuddly in pommy cartoons, something like a stripey wombat I imagine.

Why yes, find a badger........touch its arse and you will surely find out. It has wirey "grizzle" fur that is very rough to the touch....apparently.

If you DO find a badger in your tent..it really wouldnt be a good idea to try and stroke it, cos you will lose yer fingers....or even shoo it.....just get out and wait till he's finished what he's doin...most likely eating.

DO Note the warnings about keeping food away from the visiting badgers - we had one in out tent during the early hours trying to drag out a sealed coolbag that contained sealed pack of bacon and sealed pack of buns. No matter how well wrapped, they will smell it and try and get at it. Put ALL foodstuffs in the car.

My husband had to chase the thing off with a folded campchair, it wasn't startled by him and wasn't going to give up trying to claw the bag out (and they can be vicious - take note if you have a dog, as pooch will definitley come of worst!)

hence the advice of bringing the mallet...

Price: Steep (ish), but open in winter
Pitch: Take a mallet to be sure
Views: Woken up to better ones, but that often involves lugging gear up hills
ah wait, i think i saw some climber's axes on sale at the outdoor shop...
is the badger a protected animal?
I'm an insomniac agnostic dyslexic. I lay awake at night and wonder if there really is a dog.

In parks in the Sierra we have to be concerned with bears. When you go camping they have bear boxes at the campsites. If you leave food in your car, the bear will smell it out. Even if it's in a cooler. Either that or they know that there's food in the cooler. They'll jump on the roof to collapse it and break the windows out.

Wouldn't it be fun waking up to find your Chevy smashed by a bear? And him drinking all your beer, too.
